| As part of its ongoing sustainability efforts, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. intends to reduce total packaging used in its supply chain by 5% by 2013. To help meet this ambitious goal, the retailer is encouraging its direct suppliers to enter packaging data for all SKUs into its Sustainable Packaging Scorecard.
The Scorecard, developed with the help of ECRM, enables Wal-Mart to easily compare packaging sustainability across a product category and to make more informed purchasing decisions. Wal-Mart suppliers can also see how their packages compare to their competitors' and what opportunities for improvement are available for each product.
Package Modeling was created to help manufacturers pro actively find potential sustainability improvements in their packaging. The software allows users to run "what if" scenarios on their packaging to see how changing materials, designs, suppliers and other variables can affect their scores on the Sustainable Packaging Scorecard.
